Size and Time

Size and Time change a whole effect in one move. Size makes the effect larger or smaller. Time makes the effect run faster or slower. Both are tabs of one panel, titled Re:. Exercise 10 uses them for the first time.

What it makes possible:

  • An explosion fitted to a character half as tall. Size 0.50x: sizes, speeds, offsets and accelerations shrink together, and the effect keeps its proportions.
  • A sharper hit. Time 2.00x: lifetimes, delays and durations are halved, rates and speeds are doubled, and the layers keep their order.
  • A slow version of a finished effect. Time 0.50x: every part of the effect takes twice as long.
  • A factor the slider does not reach. Enter 0.25 in the readout above the slider.

Open the panelPress ≡, then Tools, then Re: Size/Time. The panel opens on the tab it showed last.
Close the panelPress Re: Size/Time again, or press X in the header.
Change tabClick Size or Time in the header. Resting the cursor on a tab for a moment also changes to it.
Fold the panel awayPress the minimise button beside X. A chip reading Re: Size/Time appears in a row under the HUD.
Bring the panel backClick the chip. The panel returns to the place it had.

The tab in use is filled. The other tab is dim. The panel grows or shrinks to fit the tab it shows. Closing with X leaves no chip.

The panel folds away by itself when nothing the plugin can edit is selected. It returns when an emitter is selected again. A panel folded by hand stays folded until its chip is clicked. Panels describes moving, resizing and folding in full.

The shortcut actions Toggle Resize and Toggle Retime bring the Size tab and the Time tab forward. Used while that tab is showing, the action closes the panel. An action has no key until one is bound in Shortcuts.

Size and Time act on the Studio selection.

A selection may mix emitter types. Each emitter is changed by the list for its own type.

TabControlKindStarts atWhat it does
BothSliderSlider1.00xSets the factor, from 0.50x to 2.00x.
BothReadout above the sliderBox1.00xShows the factor. A typed number sets an exact factor.
BothInclude DescendantsSwitchOnIncludes the emitters nested inside a selected emitter.
SizeScale Spawn AreaSwitchOffMultiplies the size of the emitter Part itself.
BothApplyButtonKeeps the change and returns the slider to 1.00x.
BothResetButtonPuts the old values back and returns the slider to 1.00x.

1.00x sits in the middle of the slider. Halving and doubling are the same distance from the middle. Drag the handle, or click anywhere on the track.

The readout above the track is a box. Enter a number to set an exact factor. A factor outside 0.50x to 2.00x is accepted, and the handle stops at the nearer end. Anything typed that is not part of a number is removed.

ToDo this
Try a factorDrag the slider. The selected emitters take the new values as the slider moves. Nothing is kept yet.
See the old values againReturn the slider to 1.00x.
Keep the factorPress Apply. The change is one step in Studio’s undo history. The slider returns to 1.00x.
Throw the factor awayPress Reset. The old values return, and the slider returns to 1.00x.

A preview is always worked out from the values the emitters had before the drag. Dragging to 2.00x and then to 1.50x gives one and a half times the old values, not three times.

The undo steps are named Part-Icles: Resize and Part-Icles: Retime.

Changing the selection while a preview shows throws the preview away. The panel starts again on the new selection.

A preview is also thrown away when its tab leaves the screen. That happens when the panel is closed, folded away, changed to the other tab, or folded by the plugin. The old values return, and the slider returns to 1.00x.

With Include Descendants on, the emitters nested inside a selected emitter are changed with it. A burst placed in a rocket’s RenderTemplate is one example. Stock ParticleEmitters nested there are changed too. With the switch off, only the selection itself is changed.

A Folder or a Model brings in everything inside it, with or without this switch. Nesting describes nested emitters.

Size multiplies what is measured in studs, or in pixels for screen images. That covers sizes, spawn offsets, speeds, accelerations and widths. Size leaves angles, times, rates and counts alone.

At 2.00x, a Speed of 10 studs per second becomes 20. A particle 1 stud wide becomes 2 studs wide. A SpreadAngle of 30 degrees stays at 30.

On a row with X, Y and Z buttons, all three axes are multiplied.

On a graph, Size multiplies the values. The random spread of the graph stays as it was. To change the spread as well, use Shifter with Scale Envelope on.

On an ImageLabel, Position and Size each hold a scale part and a pixel part. Size multiplies both parts.

Size does not change Tex. Length on a Beam.

With Scale Spawn Area on, the emitter Part itself is resized by the factor. With it off, the Part keeps its size.

Two things move with either setting, on every type that Size changes:

  • Attachments placed directly inside a selected emitter Part. Their position on the Part is multiplied by the factor. Their rotation is kept.
  • The two Attachments of a selected Beam or Trail. They are moved the same way.

Time changes how fast the whole effect runs. At 2.00x the effect runs twice as fast. At 0.50x it runs at half speed.

At 2.00x, a Lifetime of 2 seconds becomes 1. A Rate of 10 per second becomes 20. A Speed of 10 studs per second becomes 20. A HUD Delay of 0.15 seconds becomes 0.075.

An acceleration is multiplied by the factor twice. At 2.00x, an Acceleration of 0, -40, 0 studs per second squared becomes 0, -160, 0. Every path keeps its shape at the new speed.

On a Part, an Attachment or a Model, Rotation Speed is multiplied only while Rotation Mode is Speed. While it is OverLife, Time leaves Rotation Speed alone.

Time also divides the HUD Delay and Duration of every emitter by the factor. On a stock Trail it divides Duration only. A Duration typed as two numbers has both divided.

Time leaves these alone: Linger, Anim. Steps, the HUD Emit count, and every size and distance.

  • Size and Time change every row on their list. To change one row, use Shifter.
  • Enter positive factors only.
  • Size changes nothing on a Highlight, a ColorCorrection or an Atmosphere.
  • Roblox applies its own limits to the values of a graph. The Size of a stock ParticleEmitter never goes below 0.
